Sharing the Fringe with our kin in Northern Saskatchewan
The Fringe allows us to bring theatre magic from across the world and share it with Saskatoon audiences… Fringe Goes North allows us to take that impact one step further.
Over the last few years, our community has watched as arts-based engagement opportunities for young people disappeared throughout our province due to financial constraints in schools and theatres. For our rural and northern communities in particular, access to the arts is a highly limited opportunity.
In 2023, the Fringe Goes North program was created thanks to the support of Orano Canada. This project allows us to invest in the health and education of Saskatchewan’s youth by creating positive opportunities for them to engage in the arts, make new connections, and learn new skills.
The inaugral Fringe Goes North program toured Domesti-KATE and theatre workshops led by Fringe artist Kate Ryan to Pre-Cam Community School in La Ronge in September 2023. This October, the program returns thanks once again to the support of Orano Canada, taking one of our 2024 Fringe Theatre shows to Father Megret Elementary School in Wollaston Lake.
“Since the establishment of ADEA, there has not been an opportunity for live theatre to travel to any of our communities…this would be the very first experience for our students and would be met with great
enthusiasm. This community struggles through great trauma yet always finds ways to look out for their youth. A live performance like this would be a celebration in this community… Marsi Chogh” – Brenda Gabriel
Superintendent of Schools, Athabasca Denesuline Education Authority.

Unfortunately our 2024 Fringe Goes North program to Father Megret School in Wollaston was postponed due to winter weather affecting our flights. Thank you to Forest Grove School in Saskatoon for hosting us in the meantime, and we look forward to rescheduling Keith’s trip to Wollaston for the new year (2025).
2023 Fringe Goes North: Domesti-KATE
“La Ronge is an isolated community that rarely has the opportunity to have drama groups come and work with local students. [Fringe Goes North] would be a great opportunity for our students and would have a positive impact on their mental health and their achievement in school..” – Ryan Kuppenbender, Principal of Pre-Cam Community School
“Oh my goodness!!!!! I can’t say enough great things! She is amazing, inside and out!.. She was so great with the kids. We find the older kids aren’t usually into shows like the rest. Well we picked the grade 6s to get the workshops and they loved it! Seriously it was the best that students have ever been through a performance. Her microphone broke after her first act, but she just kept going and not sure didn’t stop the kids from listening. They were in at 100%. I’ve had staff come up to me and told me that after 12 years of service in the school this is the best performance they have ever seen come through our school. Seriously loved it!!! She could of been a teacher, she’s wonderful with the kiddos!” – Pre-Cam Community School teacher
